Reading and Language
Our Programs:
In the island of Roatan, English and Spanish are the main languages spoken. However, public schools only teach Spanish, yet a bilingual education is essential for the children of the island.
- The population consists of migrants from mainland Honduras, those who have been in Roatan for generations and travelers from all over the world.
- Roatan is a popular destination whose economy depends greatly on tourism.
- Spoken and written English are essential to sustain the tourism economy.
- Many students are performing below grade level in Spanish and either do not know or struggle reading and writing in English.
SOL International Foundation currently offers reading and language classes in English and Spanish which are held each evening at our community center. Students participate in programs that enhance the public education they receive through a wide variety of interactive educational activities.
Also SOL has also initiated a partnership with First Books (www.firstbooks.org) and high quality bilingual books may be purchased at very low rates. This will enable us to provide books that the children can actually own and promote reading. First Books offers book grants and free shipping to book purchases within the continental United States. So if you are coming to Roatan, and you are interested in purchasing and/or shipping books, please contact us!
