Reading and Language
On the island of Roatan, English and Spanish are the main languages spoken. However, public schools only teach Spanish, yet a bilingual education is essential for the children of the island.
- The population consists of migrants from mainland Honduras, those who have been in Roatan for generations and travelers from all over the world.
- Roatan is a popular destination whose economy depends greatly on tourism.
- Spoken and written English are essential to sustain the tourism economy.
- Many students are performing below grade level in Spanish and either do not know how, or struggle to read and write in English.
SOL International Foundation is always looking for English and Spanish tutors to assist students in our community. If you would like to volunteer as a tutor, email us to find out how you can help!
With the upcoming addition of our indoor Community Education Center, we hope to expand our library of educational tools and books. So, if you are coming to Roatan, and you are interested in purchasing and/or shipping books, please contact us!
